THQ Enlists Crytek for Homefront Sequel

Despite the game’s negatively mixed critical reception, THQ never lost faith in their Homefront product. This FPS offering seemed to do fiscally well in the face of mostly low review scores. The company’s publisher constantly insisted that there was more to the title’s universe to be explored.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that they believed Kaos Studios was capable of delivering the next iteration in the Homefront brand. The team that built the first game was shuttered months after the title’s release. That news came in mid-June, and it was then that THQ said they weren’t done with the Homefront franchise.

Now, by way of this morning’s press release, THQ has announced that it has more concrete plans in motion for the follow-up to this shooter. Crytek, the studio famously behind Crysis and Crysis 2, will develop the next Homefront. Danny Bilson, EVP of Core Games at THQ, was quoted in the release regarding the decision:

“Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry’s best talent…Homefront’s unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over. With Crytek’s industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we’re supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand.”

Crytek Founder, CEO and President Cevat Yerli spoke to reinforce the idea that he and his team are excited about the Homefront canvas:

“We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ…We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game. It’s really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way.”

The sequel is still years away, so don’t get too excited just yet. The release indicates that THQ and Crytek are targeting a 2014 release for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
