Gears of War 3 Story-based DLC on the Horizon

We know, we know, the game has literally been out for less than 24 hours and we’re already reporting on its DLC. The critical acclaim for Gears of War 3 has been absolutely universal, with the third property in the trilogy earning perfect, or near perfect, scores from a ton of review outlets.

Such success commands that this game will have a huge following at launch, and that following already wants to know about what type of DLC they can expect when they’re all done with the campaign. Gears of War 3 will obviously feature map pack style DLC, but Cliff Bleszinski, designer at Epic Games, has confirmed that Gears 3 will also see story-driven DLC.

More than that, the story-driven stuff won’t involve main players like Marcus, Dom or Baird. Here’s Bleszinski in an interview with The Telegraph:

“We have some DLC that’s coming up. We’ve confirmed we’ll be doing campaign DLC. One thing I can tell you is that you’re not going to see Marcus or Dom or Cole in it. I believe that DLC should be unique and cool, like Lost and the Damned, Gay Tony, Mad Moxie’s Underdome Riot. All those kind of things. DLC’s the place where you play and have fun. So that’s one thing that’s an indication of where things may be going in the future.”

Map packs and skins are great when it comes to extending the longevity of multiplayer madness in a given popular release; however, there are some gamers out there that would rather see more from the story side of projects after games launch. I’m one of those gamers. I’ll take well-crafted, single player goodness over additional multiplayer content almost every single time.

And if Bleszinski and Epic are looking towards stuff like the DLC from Grand Theft Auto IV for inspiration, fans may be in for a real Gears universe treat when these projects start releasing.

What type of DLC fan are you? Do you prefer new multiplayer maps or extra story/universe extending narrative?
