NYT: ‘Fairly Different’ iPhone 5 Now ‘Just Weeks Away’

iPhone-5-Case-Mate-Spread

This wait for the iPhone 5 seems to be taking forever. We initially expected Apple to announce the new device at WWDC back in June, and three months on we still don’t have a fifth-generation iPhone. However, according to The New York Times, we’re “just weeks away” from a new device.

And when I say new, I mean it’s not just a rehashed iPhone 4 with a few internal updates here and there. At least that’s what the NYT says. Citing an Apple employee, the NYT’s Nick Bilton writes:

We’re just weeks away from the announcement of the new Apple iPhone 5, according to an Apple employee who asked not to be named because he was not allowed to speak publicly for the company.

Bilton then went on to talk about those alleged iPhone 5 cases that were leaked by Case-Mate yesterday: Although Bilton believes the leak was a “sneaky public relations tactic,” he does concede that the iPhone 5 will be “fairly different” to the iPhone 4, according to his sources:

Sneaky public relations tactics aside, an engineer familiar with the new iPhone said it would be fairly different from the iPhone 4 — including on the inside.

The new iPhone will come with an eight-megapixel camera, this person said, an upgrade from the five-megapixel camera in the iPhone 4.

The Apple engineer also said the new phone would have a faster A5 dual-core processor.

Unfortunately, Bilton did not confirm whether or not those Case-Mate leaks were an accurate portrayal of the upcoming iPhone 5’s design, but his promises of a “fairly different” iPhone are good news to those who are anticipating something completely new.

Bilton also briefly mentioned the possibility of near-field communications (NFC) technology coming to the iPhone. He says his sources have revealed that NFC will be making its way to the device via a new chip that will be made by Qualcomm, however, he could not confirm whether this would appear in the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 6.

A number of reports in recent weeks have suggested a mid-October release for the iPhone 5, so Bilton’s claims of a launch “just weeks away” are nothing new. However, when they come from a publication like The New York Times — and not just a Best Buy stock room assistant — they seem to have a little more substance.

What do you think the iPhone 5 will look like? Will you be pleased if it looks like the device in those Case-Mate leaks?
