Portal 2 Sales Strongest on PC Platform

Valve doesn’t share exact sales figures for their Steam offerings, typically. So when an interview with Gamasutra turns towards software sales performance for the company, folks tend to take notice. This time, the reticule is focused on Portal 2 and its sales for consoles compared to Steam.

Portal 2 has sold better over Steam than on any other platform.

Now that may seem like common sense to those reading. A Valve game should sell best over the Valve marketplace, right? Well, that’s not always the case. And Gabe Newell, Co-Founder of Valve, spoke towards the crazy inconsistencies the company experiences when it comes to which games will sell best on which platforms.

We can never predict; I mean we just try to build good games and then we tend to be surprised.Portal 2 did better on the PC than it did on the consoles; Left 4 Dead did better on the consoles than it did on the PC. So you know we don’t try to guess, because we’re not sure what value there is to guessing. We’ve never had a situation where we said, “We really, really want to build something that is more popular for the console guys.” Because usually we have a bunch of other higher priority problems we want to solve. So we’re glad that people want to play our games wherever they want to play.

This is not meant as an offense since, due mostly to budget and social play, I am typically a console gamer. However, to me, it makes sense that Portal 2 would do better over Steam than consoles when compared to Left 4 Dead‘s opposing performance. PC gamers tend to be a more thoughtful crowd.

Hold up, folks, lower the pitchforks…

Consoles are less expensive, they are more readily accessible and they often serve as babysitter nowadays. Every pre-teenaged boy is screaming this and that about he next game he gets to shoot at dudes, this console player is the one snatching up more copies of Left 4 Dead than Portal 2.

The PC crowd is probably a bit older, a bit more flushed when it comes to cash and a bit more thoughtful and intelligent when it comes to gaming selection. That’s why games like Civ and other more strategic  titles do well on the PC platform rather than the consoles. Well, the maturity factor coupled with the mouse and keyboard control method.

Am I crazy here? Is the mean age of console gamers actually older than that of the PC base?
