EA Says the PS Vita Will Fare Better than the Nintendo 3DS

Like it or not, the smartphone platform is giving portable gaming a run for its money. The Nintendo 3DS is the first brand new system to face the smartphone market head on since the iOS and Android platforms began making games available on a massively affordable scale.

Some are saying that the 3DS doesn’t have the mojo to compete with today’s phones, but my stance happens to be that a lack of good software is what’s hurting the 3DS right now).

EA Labels President Frank Gibeau spoke to CVG about the Nintendo 3DS’ failings, and what the PS Vita has that will make it stand a bit taller at launch. Gibeau highlighted the fact that smartphones are a new, strong source of competition in the portable gaming market.

“I think that part of the videogame business is tough right now because they have had some significant competition come in that was totally disruptive, and that was the smartphone…”

Gibeau explained that he thinks Sony’s PS Vita stands a chance at faring much better than the 3DS because the technology within is a lot closer to what phones offer, while still delivering a wealth of great interfacing and innovation for gaming.

“I think [Sony has] got a shot because they have some really unique innovation in the control scheme, the technology and the screen. It’s got a lot of social features now so that you can actually communicate with your friends and be social…

You can’t ring them up by putting the device up to your ear but in general I think they’ve got most of the capabilities that you’d find in a smart phone, with some unique capabilities that make them stand out.”

Software is what moves gaming hardware. Sony admitted yesterday that they were guilty of not supporting the PlayStation Portable with a strong enough, constant enough supply of great games. Gibeau offered the same idea.

“I don’t think they’re quite in the same boat as the 3DS… the 3DS was a really interesting piece of technology but I think there was some confusion over it and the title slate was a little different…I think Vita has a better chance because it has a stronger title slate at launch.”

Do you think the PS Vita will do better than the Nintendo 3DS did during its launch? How about since Nintendo’s price cut, will that help insulate the 3DS against the PS Vita come early 2012?
