Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V With Android 2.3.4 Announced

All of Sony’s 2011 Xperia phones will have Android 2.3.4, including the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V, announced today. We saw the emergence of the original Neo at Mobile World Congress back in February, but the Xperia Neo seems to be taking things to the next level in terms of hardware and software. The Sony Ericsson Neo V, possibly named after Keanu Reeves, receives the following, courtesy of Android 2.3.4:

  • Google Talk with Video Chat for smartphones with front-facing cameras
  • Updated Facebook inside Xperia™ functionality for enhanced like, share and discover abilities
  • World’s first 3D sweep panorama functionality powered by Sony
  • The software upgrade enables consumers to turn their Xperia smartphone into a mini-mobile PC by connecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard or game controller) to Sony Ericsson LiveDock™ multimedia station. Connect the smartphone to a TV via HDMI to get a big screen experience.
  • Swype text input – text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next
  • Screen capture – allows the user to share a screen grab from anywhere in the phone

Yes, I know, half of these upgrades like screen capture and Swype are quite behind the times, but better late than never, eh? As far as the phone itself, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V will offer the following mediocre specs:

  • 3.7” capacitive touchscreen with 854×480-pixel resolutionSony-Ericsson-Xperia-Neo-V-Feature
  • Sony Bravia Graphics
  • Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 5-megapixel rear facing camera
  • 640 x 480 VGA front-facing camera
  • 320MB internal storage
  • 2GB microSD card included
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • Available in white, blue or silver

320MB of internal storage? Yikes! That 2GB MicroSD card will suck up media quicker than you can power on the phone, so you’ll need a larger capacity card. Also, the 1GHz Snapdragon is more like a flying grasshopper at this stage in the smartphone game, and the rest of the Neo V’s specs are quite elementary, my dear Watsons. There’s no word on an official Sony Ericsson Neo V ship date, though Android 2.3.4 software upgrades for existing Sony Ericsson phone owners will begin in select markets in October.
