Swype: Nexus S 4G (Sprint) Owners Get Beloved Alterna Keyboard

Swype is arguably one of the best smartphone keyboards available to date, but only some Android users get to experience the fast swiping glory of inputting text with it. And now, a new userbase joins the ranks.

When the Nexus S 4G joined Sprint‘s lineup, the only keyboard on deck was the stock Android 2.3 Gingerbread virtual QWERTY. But owners of this device are now getting some love, as the carrier is pushing out an update that gives users the much-loved Swype keyboard.

If you’re not familiar with Swype, it’s an onscreen keyboard that lets users draw lines from one key to the next to form words. But don’t let the simplicity of this idea fool you — this functionality and efficiency is huge, as it makes text input faster and more efficient than tapping on each individual letter.

On deck this time around are some new tricks, like gesture-based shortcuts, streamlined access to “Select All, Cut, Copy, and Paste,” auto caps for proper nouns, user-definable Swype dictionary, and fast strokes to launch major apps, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Google Maps. (Example: You can set Twitter to launch whenever you swipe from “t” to “w.”)

Laptop Mag posted the official video promo of the new hotness, so check it out embedded below.
