Official Trailer and Rumored DotA 2 Screenshots Hit the Net

Two massive bits of media concerning DotA 2 sprung up online in the span of 24 hours. The first came in the form of rumor. The screenshots below should still be labelled “unconfirmed” until the official versions show up later this week.

But the second news for DotA 2 is the official teaser trailer above. While it’s built entirely of pre-rendered cutscene, it’s likely enough to get fans salivating.

Defense of the Ancients started out as a custom scenario built anonymously by several unique authors with the Warcraft III toolset. The game made it’s way around forums and blogs quickly, and DotA (as it’s regularly called) became huge. It’s now one of the biggest, most competitive PC games going.

Valve snagged the rights to develop DotA 2 and is slated to release the game for the PC and Mac platforms via Steam later this year. It’s worth noting, however, that the company has been relatively silent over the course of development.

Despite the silence, support for DotA is still so large that the Valve Corporation is hosting a DotA 2 tournament this week at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. They’re calling the tourney “The International,” and the prize pot for winning is over $1,000,000. This tournament is the first time Valve is publicly showing Defense of the Ancients 2.

These leaked screenshots (one above, one below) still fall very much in the category of rumor. However, it’s worth noting that the general consesus from writers, gamers and commentors is that they are rather legit. We won’t call them that until they line up with the official shots and footage due out during Gamescom.

Until then, take in the screenshots. Click on each to see massive versions. Do yourselves a favor and get pumped for any type of DotA 2 news coming; and that includes the very cool trailer above.
