HTC has just acquired a $300 million majority stake in Beats Electronics, which will see the Beats by Dr. Dre audio technology integrated into its devices later this year, finally delivering better mobile audio. Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, said that the company’s new partnership will bring “unbeatable sound” to HTC handsets:
“Beats has found a unique way to harness popular culture in a manner that is unlike any other brand today. It’s an exciting brand that has been built around providing something very special, and we believe our strategic partnership will provide customers with unbeatable sound on HTC phones. We obsess over every detail of a consumer’s mobile experience, and audio is a critical part of that experience.”
This is a partnership that I’m sure every HTC fan will be excited about. Beats products are famous for their superior sound quality and this will undoubtedly separate HTC’s handsets from Android rivals from Motorola, Samsung and Sony — especially for music lovers.
Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Beats by Dr. Dre and chairman and CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, which is a division of Universal Music Group and also a stakeholder in Beats, says the company’s new partnership is a “critical step” in their mission to “clean up the destruction of audio”:
“The HTC and Beats by Dr. Dre partnership is an opportunity for two world-class companies to redefine the smartphone industry and define the future. For Beats by Dr. Dre, this represents a critical step in our continued mission to clean up the destruction of audio caused by the digital revolution and reengineer how sound is delivered, so the consumer feels the music the way that the artist intended.”
HTC’s new partnership will not affect its existing partnerships Beats Electronics already has in place with Chrysler, HP and Monster.
I’m a huge iPhone fan but there’s no denying that the device’s sound quality could be improved. Though I doubt HTC’s new partnership will persuade me to migrate over to the Android dark side, I’m certainly looking forward to trying the new devices.
Will you be looking forward to HTC’s new Beats devices coming this fall?
