Lemieux, Gretzky, Legends Coming to NHL 12

Gather round fellow hockey fans, EA Sports has released a new teaser for NHL 12 that should have each and every one of us foaming at the mouth in anticipation for this year’s entry. It looks like the development studio in Vancouver, Canada has been lucky enough to add some of the greatest legends to ever play the game.

No specific names were announced, but any big fan of hockey will likely immediately recognize players like Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman and Chris Chelios based solely on their jerseys and play situations. Yahoo’s Puck Daddy Blog breaks down the teased players best for those that know their hockey lore. Gretzky’s the most obvious addition, but Puck Daddy dishes the supposed greats making the cut based on the teaser trailer above:

Aside from Gretzky, there’s a Detroit Red Wing rubbing out Milan Lucic. Steve Yzerman, perhaps?

A Chicago Blackhawks defenseman with the number 7? No doubt Chris Chelios.

And finally, we get a glimpse of a Pittsburgh Penguin from the knees down making a Boston Bruins defenseman look silly. Appears like Mario Lemieux replaying his famous goal against Ray Bourque.

The famous goal in question came from when 66 deked Ray Bourque out of his mind.

This marks the second time in the last year that EA Sports is looking to amp up their gaming roster by adding legendary players to the playable mix with Michael Jordan gracing the cover of NBA Elite. It’s something, of course, that sports games have been doing for a long time. It’s too bad that dream teams and classic moments have become a thing of the past in recent sporting titles.

The NHL franchise continues, as far as this sports gamer is concerned, to be EA Sports’ best yearly offering. The addition of the best to ever play the game to NHL 12 simply solidifies my opinion.

Which legend are looking forward to see virtually lace up?
