Rumor: Borderlands 2 Announcement Coming Soon

Eurogamer has supposedly learned from a source “close to the game” that Borderlands 2 will be announced by 2K Games very soon. This rumor indicates that the game will ship next year for the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC.

As Eurogamer points out, rumors and speculation of the almost definite announcement of a Borderlands sequel have been cropping up ever since the original title’s release. The game established a¬†die-hard¬†following immediately after launch, and most critics gave the game a strong nod for its RPG, loot and team play elements.

Gearbox Software, the studio behind the Borderlands IP, would absolutely love to make another game in the franchise. Eurogamer had this quote from the studio’s CEO, Randy Pitchford:

“I can tell you that myself and everyone at Gearbox LOVES Borderlands and we have been absolutely thrilled at the reception it’s gotten from our customers and the fact that it’s sold over four million units now…So you can see that we supported the game like mad with lots of great DLC and you can imagine that we’re going to want to do a lot of things with Borderlands in the future.

…But we’ve only announced what we’ve announced. If we haven’t announced it, it doesn’t exist.”

That last bit, of course, is the main snag in this rumor. As with anything in the world of speculation, don’t color something confirmed until it’s officially announced. While gamers and Gearbox employees would both probably love to see a Borderlands 2, assume it isn’t happening until you hear otherwise.

Here’s hoping that a sequel is, in fact, in the works. The news wouldn’t be all that shocking, of course. And I know I’d love to see a more focused, fleshed out set of characters and plot points in the sequel. Couple that with the gameplay of the original and I’d consider Borderlands 2 a must-own product.

What do you think?
