Leaked Honeycomb Beta For Google TV (Logitech Revue) Walkthrough Vid

Got a Logitech Revue Google TV and a penchant for tinkering with your gadgets? Well then, you’ll be interested to know that as of today, Honeycomb can run on your box/TV set-up — and it doesn’t even need rooting. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s a beta release, so users may contend with a less-than-friendly setup process, plus some bugs and glitches. But if you’re desperate to give this a spin, here’s the scoop in a nutshell.

GTVHacker leaked the Android 3.1 beta update (available at the source link, once you register). But before you do, take note of a few things: Some people are able to install without a hitch, while others (even seasoned tech gurus) have problems flashing this and getting it to work. And even once the install’s done, it’s not all puppies and rainbows. There are pros, like an improved Media Player (that can run more types of vids), as well as cons that include a lack of Netflix functionality, multiple Market app glitches and UI/layout quirks (particularly with auto-rotating Honeycomb apps). But maybe the biggest issue of all is that users who try this could get stuck with this beta, unable to go back (presumably until the full release comes out, reportedly this fall).

Given that the set-top box is now going for a mere $99, some brave souls may find the risk acceptable. If you’re one of them, and decide to attempt this, be sure to report back here and let us know how it went.

For the rest of us who aren’t that brave, at least we can live vicariously by watching this walkthrough video, courtesy of Channel Android. (For an idea of what it takes to install this, they also created an installation video here.)
