U.S. Cellular, the sixth largest carrier in the country, sure seems to be upping its profile as of late. From announcing the rollout of an LTE network back in May, to dropping a ton of phones and tablets in our laps, the company is definitely stepping up its game in the ultra competitive world of cellular carriers. Now comes a leaked roadmap of releases courtesy of Android Central that points to even more exciting devices, and one that seems oddly familiar, albeit under another name.
While the list of upcoming phones is a mix of brands, low-ends/high-ends and OSes, the one that sort of leaps out is the the Motorola Electrify in Oct. It’s sporting a a 4.3-inch display, Android Gingerbread, a dual-core processor, an 8MP rear camera, a VGA front camera, HDMI & DLNA output and international GSM support. If all this sounds oddly familiar, it’s because it’s essentially the Motorola Photon. Sure the Photon drops on July 31st for Sprint, but not too long after you can pick it up at U.S. Cellular, just under a different name.
Here is the full list of devices:
- Samsung Character – July
- LG Attune – July
- LG Envoy – July
- LG Wine II (Color Refresh) – August
- BlackBerry Torch 9850 – August
- HTC Flyer – August
- LG 855 – September
- PCD Wrangler – October
- HTC Desire II – October
- HTC Wildfire S – October
- Motorola Electrify – October
- Samsung Repp – October
- BlackBerry Curve 9350 – October
- Huawei Ascend II – November
While U.S. Cellular isn’t the biggest name in the game, where it does have service it seems to be huge. They have service in my neck of the woods, and easily 75% of the people I know in this area are on this company’s network. I’m the odd man out being on Sprint (and AT&T … I work in tech, which makes it perfectly natural for me to always carry two phones … right?), and I’m always blown away by how many people are with this company. Looking at this lineup, I would be surprised to see their market share grow a bit more.
Do you see anything on the list that gets you interested?
