iOS users, are you jealous over how some Android users get to enjoy Swype? The keyboard-swiping text entry method seems to have a divided response — some people adore it, and miss it like crazy when they move to an iPhone, while others just can’t muster any love for it.
Well, if you have a jailbroken device and want to check it out for yourself, there’s now an unofficial version available in Cydia. Third-party dev Andrew Liu, who has no connection to Swype or Apple, has been working behind the scenes to offer his take on the alternate keyboard. So far, the proto version looks interesting, but not perfect. This is a beta, so the functionality is pretty rough around the edges. First off, it’s not accessible across all apps — limited mainly to native applications and maybe a couple of others — and the familiar blue line (showing your path across the virtual keyboard) is missing. Still, it’s a solid first step with a lot of potential.
The whole idea of alternate keyboards is a good one, and although Apple may not jump into bed with Swype, hopefully it will consider officially allowing more of them (beyond the international versions or emoji apps, that is).
iPhone Download Blog did a video demo, so take a look and then let us know what you think. Would you love to see this or a bona fide version of Swype arrive on iOS, or does the thought make you go, “Meh”?
