Secret Service Investigating FOX News Twitter Account Hack

by Emily Price | July 5, 2011July 5, 2011 11:00 am PDT

Yesterday Fox News’ Twitter account was hacked by a group calling themselves Scriptkiddies. The group hacked into the account and then tweeted several fake messages about the assassination of President BarackObama such as “BREAKING NEWS: President @BarackObama assassinated, 2 gunshot wounds have proved too much. It’s a sad 4th for #america. #obamadead RIP,” and “@BarackObama shot twice at a Ross’ restaurant in Iowa while campaigning.RIP Obama, best regards to the Obama family.”

Fox News has alerted the U.S. Secret Service to the issue and says it will do “appropriate follow up,” according to spokesman George Ogilvie.

After a brief period of downtime yesterday, the @FoxNewspolitics account on Twitter is back up and running, and the offending tweets have been removed from the account’s Twitter feed.

What do you think about the hack? Should the secret service be involved in the investigation?
