While a massive chunk of the gaming world would probably like it just fine if Naughty Dog stuck to cranking out fantastic entries in the Uncharted storyline from now until eternity, there are gamers out there (myself included) that would like to see the team return to Jak and Daxter. The Jak and Daxter franchise hasn’t seen any love on the PlayStation 3 yet. In fact, the last proper Jak and Daxter title to release from the Naughty Dog studio was Jak 3 for the PlayStation 2 in late 2004.
That’s right; watch me as I completely ignore the racing game from ’05.
Game Informer has it from Evan Wells, Naughty Dog Co-president, that the studio is actually still interested in returning to the Jak and Daxter brand. Wells explains that it’s not been a lack of love that’s kept them from coming back to the franchise, but rather a lack of time and focus.
What I hear a lot recently [from fans] is to make another Jak & Daxter game. My answer always is we’d love to do it, there’s a lot of love for the franchise and it has a special place in our hearts for sure, but we’re sort of heads down, working on one game at a time now and are focusing on Uncharted, but we’d love to go back to it at some point.
That sort of discussion doesn’t exactly paint the town with promises of a new game, but it does go a long way to placate fans of what’s seeming like a forgotten franchise. For a lot of gamers, Jak and Daxter was one of the first brilliantly made adventure-platformers that they’ve ever experienced. The games moved PS2s, and they solidified Naughty Dog’s status as a fantastic studio.
If the series ever makes a return, we’ll be in stores on the first day to give the newest game a play. For now, though, we’ll take Uncharted 3 this fall.
