Facebook’s “Something Awesome” Is Skype-Powered Video Chat

Rumor has it Facebook’s “something awesome” its launching next week will be Skype-powered video chat.

The service is set to be officially announced at a press event next Wednesday; however, details about the service have started to surface on the web from a few inside sources. If the rumors are true, the video chat service will be integrated into Facebook proper, allowing you to video chat on the site with your Facebook friends from your browser window. A desktop component also exists, which may or may not need to installed in order for you to use the service.

Facebook and Skype have already been working together, integrating some Facebook features into Skype proper. Adding a video chat function to Facebook will in theory keep users returning to Facebook for their video chat needs rather than leaving the site to use traditional Skype, or using that sexy new “Hangouts” function in Google+, and turn Facebook into a “one stop shop” of sorts for all your communication needs.

It’s also worth pointing out that Microsoft (the soon to be owners of Skype) own a stake in Facebook. It’s to their advantage for Facebook (and Skype) to do well.

What do you think about the possibility of Skype becoming integrated into Facebook? Would you use it?
