Internet Connectivity “Very Important” for Wii U

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto spoke with MTV Multiplayer about the online portion of their next console, the Wii U. Before explaining that Internet connectivity does matter for the company, Miyamoto, likely inadvertently, shed light on why the Nintendo Wii delivered such a lackluster online experience. This is Miyamoto speaking about Nintendo’s perspective when it comes to online gaming:

“We’re not going to sit here and say that our goal is to become the number one online gaming company, because that’s not our goal…”

And that’s more than likely why the Wii never stood up as a real, legitimate contender in the discussion of which system performed the best in the online community space.

However, Miyamoto indicates that the Internet and Internet connectivity are still two very important facets of the Wii U and its development. The famed Nintendo designer explains that the company is interested in making the most out of the Internet as it pertains to their style of delivering entertainment from within the console’s design potential.

“…understanding that the types of experiences our consumers like to play do often contain elements to them that can be improved or may even require an online connection and also knowing that the system is going to have a browser I think suggests that obviously internet and internet connectivity is going to be very important for the system…

For example, there are opportunities to take advantage of online to expand a local, same-room multiplayer experience by connecting that to the internet and making new types of play that way. Also by having the smaller screen, being able to go online and perhaps see what game your friend is playing or see what TV they’re watching, I think there’s a lot of possibilities for how you could use that. Certainly internet functionality is something that will be important for the system.”

MTV Multiplayer was kind enough to steer the conversation towards what most gamers would consider the elephant in the room of Nintendo’s online gaming service: user accounts. As it stands now, each system has its own account. There’s no individuality within that account for multiple users, the system pairs up with other systems through the awful Friend Code format and players stop there.

But, as MTV Multiplayer indicated through talks with Ubisoft during E3, Nintendo will probably be moving away from a single account per system and towards a multiple user format. While Miyamoto would not confirm or deny that fact, he did offer that Nintendo created the Mii specifically for this type of individuality, and that there may be something there for the multiplayer side of the Wii U.

As more surfaces for the next system from Nintendo, we’ll have it.
