As Apple continues to prepare to launch iCloud in the fall – the service that links your iOS devices, Macs, and even Windows-based devices – on going questions continue to be posed by current subscribers of Apple’s MobileMe service.
MobileMe is the service that Apple announced back in 2008, replacing .Mac, a range of services offering email, calendar, contact-synchronization, file storage, photo/video sharing, and web hosting, for your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Macs and PCs. The service is paid on a yearly basis.
In the words of the “Big A,” “iCloud is Apple’s new cloud service, which stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, and documents and wirelessly pushes them to all your devices. iCloud integrates seamlessly with your apps, so everything happens automatically. iCloud will be free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users.”
They claim that the majority of MobileMe’s previous services have been rewritten to seamlessly integrate with iCloud in the fall. Having said that, they will be discontinuing the paid MobileMe service. If a user had an active account as of June 6, 2011, the service will be honored through June 30, 2012. As of that date, MobileMe will be fully discontinued.
During the transition period, MobileMe services like Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Find My iPhone, and Back To My Mac will be made available through iCloud. They will be joined by the new services including iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream, Documents in the Cloud, Automatic Downloads and Backup/Restore.
iDisk, Gallery, and iWeb will be supported through June 30, 2012. After that date, they will be removed.
