Sony: PlayStation Network Should be Fully Restored this Week

A press release went out early this morning indicating that Sony would have the PlayStation Network brought up to fully restored status by the end of this week. While initially estimates released that indicated the company would be hitting May 31st, more recently representatives of the Sony brand have said it would come within a few days of that earmarked date. If this press release is properly forcasting the restoration, then that previous prediction would remain correct.

Here’s what Sony said they’ve accomplished and which services will be up by the end of the week:

The company implemented considerable security enhancements to the network infrastructure, as well as conducted testing of the payment process and commerce functions. The first phase of PlayStation Network and Qriocity restoration began on May 15 in the Americas and Europe/PAL territories, followed by Japan and Asian countries and regions on May 28, when the company brought partial services back online. With this partial restoration users were able to access to some of the services such as online game play, account management, friend lists and chat functionality were restored. The full restoration of PlayStation Network as well as part of services to become available on Qriocity will include:

  • Full functionality on PlayStation®Store
  • In-game commerce
  • Ability to redeem vouchers and codes
  • Full functionality on Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3, PSP, VAIO and other PCs
  • Full functionality on Media Go

If you’re a PlayStation 3 or PSP owner and you’ve been following this network problem, then you likely already know about the Welcome Back program. For those that don’t, the program is Sony’s way of saying sorry and welcome back with free games and content. This offer is still set to become available once the PlayStation Store has fully resumed operational status.

We’ll post a story once the shop is officially open in regions like the Americas and Europe. Once the shop is live, make sure you hop on within 30 days to take advantage of the free titles Sony is tossing on the table.

As more news comes of the restoration of the PlayStation Network services, we’ll have it.
