Google Blocks Movie Rentals On Rooted Android Devices

If you want to root your Android device and watch rented movies on it – it looks like you may be out of luck. When trying to play a rented movie from YouTube or the Android Market, rooted Android device owners have been receiving “Failed to fetch license for [movie title] (error 49)” messages.

Google claims you’ll get the message because “rooted devices are currently unsupported due to requirements related to copyright protection.” Up until now rooting hasn’t been an issue when using other movie rental services like Netflix and iTunes, it’s interesting that a company behind an “open platform” would make a move to restrict it.

What do you think? Have any of you tried to watch rented movies on a rooted Android device? Do you think its fair for Google to restrict the functionality?
