Imagine a game content pricing system that would actually make games more expensive for all of the racist, immature and obnoxious jerks out in the gaming world. Valve‘s considering it. Gabe Newell spoke with Develop magazine at length about what retail pricing can and can’t do; one of the things that it can’t do, and that Steam (Valve’s game marketplace) is capable of doing, is pricing games according to the way players are perceived.
While this new concept has not been executed, what Valve is even considering is monumental. And, in this writer’s opinion, absolutely brilliant. Gamers that have good reputations for being friendly, sporting players will receive the right to purchase game content for less than its suggested price. In fact, there’s a chance that the nicest and most well behaved of the bunch will get free content.
For those that are complete idiots online, the ones that scream obscenities, send threatening vulgar messages or use hate language constantly, comes a new set of prices. Those players may pay more than full price for the right to game.
Valve’s Gabe Newell explains:
“The industry has this broken model, which is one price for everyone. That’s actually a bug, and it’s something that we want to solve through our philosophy of how we create entertainment products…Some people, when they join a server, a ton of people will run with them…Other people, when they join a server, will cause others to leave.
…So, in practice, a really likable person in our community should get DotA 2 for free, because of past behavior in Team Fortress 2…Now, a real jerk that annoys everyone, they can still play, but a game is full price and they have to pay an extra hundred dollars if they want voice.
You’re never going to see that in a retail store … It’s people who make hats get paid. People who are really popular play for less, or free.”
So, gaming on the cheap for kindness or extremely expensive for idiocy. While I’m an asserted fan, where do you stand?
