Samsung Launches Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 and 5.0

Galaxy S WiFiThe Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 and Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 media players have finally had their official launch today, but it’s still unclear when you’ll be able to walk into a store in the United States to pick one up.

We first got a look at the Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 at CES back in Jan., which it was simply called the Galaxy Music Playerat the time.  And just last week our own Noah Kravitz got to put the Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 on video at Appnation SF.  While back in Jan. they couldn’t give us a release date, just last week they were saying the launch of both was imminent, but they still could give an exact date.

While both devices officially launched today, the Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 is starting off in only Russia for right now while the Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 is hitting shelves in Switzerland as we speak.  There is no U.S. release date for either as of yet, but both of them are definitely coming to the country at some point.

There are some minor differences between the units beyond the instantly noticeable screen sizes, mostly in the in sensor area and batteries, but it will definitely just be a matter of preference as to which one you end up purchasing.

These devices are clearly targeted at the iPod Touch, and they appear that they could do quite well against it.  Audio enthusiasts have long lamented the lack of support for the Flac format on any of Apple’s music products, but it’s definitely present in these.  Add in the support for several video codecs, and it looks like Samsung may have some real winners on its hands.

The only potential sticking point is the fact they go out of the way to say that there is a “possibility” of upgrading Android 2.2 Froyo to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.  Either they are they aren’t, but my guess is it’s going to be tied to how many of these they sell.  Would it really be worth the effort of preparing an update if they only sell a few thousand?

Overall, they look compelling, and if you want to get your Android on with a smaller device that lacks a phone, these just may be your answer.
