Apple Has The Least Green Data Centers According to Greenpeace

According to Greenpeace, Apple is “least green” when it comes to data centers. In a report entitled “How Dirty is You Data?”, the company was put against other tech companies such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, IBM, Microsoft, HP, Amazon and Yahoo to determine who was the most green in their data center energy use.

Apple’s downfall? It’s North Carolina-based data center that is set to open later this year. The center will triple the amount of energy Apple currently uses in data centers, with the company using the same amount of energy it might take to power 80,000 US homes. 62% of the energy at the NC center will also be coal-powered (the dirtiest of all energy sources), and 32% nuclear.

You can download a PDF the of report here. What do you think? Should Apple consider using more renewable resources like wind and solar to power its data centers?
