In possibly one of the worst weeks in the recent gaming release calendar, the PlayStation Network on the PS3 has gone down. Gamers looking to launch the multiplayer portions of LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3, Mortal Kombat and Portal 2 are, basically, out of luck.
Outages happen, absolutely. In the digital age, it’s almost expected that services will drop from time to time. For the most part, consumers are okay with the issues if they are resolved quickly. Unfortunately for Sony, it looks like the issues plaguing the PlayStation Network may be more brutal than that. In a recent update on the PlayStation.Blog, Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, shed some soft light on the problems.
While we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the service completely back up and running. Thank you very much for your patience while we work to resolve this matter.
That bit doesn’t explain the outage, but it does keep gamers privy to the fact that Sony is working hard to resolve the problem.
Games and gamers have become so reliant on the online portion of their products that an outage like this is practically cripling. In fact, most “great” games pack a multiplayer component that extends the lifeline of the title well past that derived from its single player portion. Take a game like Call of Duty: Black Ops, for instance. These two days on the PS3, most gamers will probably drop that game and move on.
Don’t forget about Portal 2, either. Valve brought Portal 2 to the PS3 in an exceptionally unique way. The PS3 version of the game is capable of cross-platform play with Steam users. That’s a first for the system, and it’s an advertised function that simply doesn’t work.
It will be interesting to see how Sony responds to this outage of their service; especially when one considers the premium tier within the PlayStation Network, PlayStation Plus.
