The third chapter in Rockstar and Team Bondi’s L.A. Noire Gameplay Series has arrived, and it depicts the game’s mechanic of rising through the ranks. As the trailer explains, players will guide Cole Phelps as he works his way across five ranks and five desks in the Los Angeles Police Department in gritty 1947. You’ll catch around three minutes of entirely in-game footage showing off the rank specific elements of L.A. Noire.
One bit that this trailer briefly glosses over is the upcoming element of partners. All Rockstar games are known for the characters they deliver. In fact, as a developer, Rockstar ranks among the best at consistently presenting characters that fans either love or love to hate. One of the best characters within the developer’s roster was unveiled last year; of course I’m referring to John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. In L.A. Noire, it looks like partners are going to be a fantastic source for character development.
Finally, the trailer also briefly explains one facet of L.A. Noire that has me particularly excited. Unassigned cases will be radioed to gamers as they play. They’ll encourage more travel around the city, more sporadic and random combat and they’ll actually earn you case solving intuition points. In a title that looks like it will have a relatively linear path, when compared to the open world efforts from Rockstar, these random cases will likely breathe space into the campaign.
