HTC Sense 3.0 Not Coming to Older Phones

HTC Sensation 4GOwners of current HTC phones who have been hoping to get the latest version of Sense, the company’s user interface skin, are going to be disappointed to learn that they’ll only be getting certain aspects of it.

AndroidCentral is reporting that the official HTC Twitter stream has been making some comments about the next version of the UI and who can expect it to show up on their phones.  In response to one customer’s query about his Desire HD getting an update, the company said:

due to Sense’s hardware requirements, only our newest devices (Flyer, EVO 3D, Sensation) will be able to support it

They have come back with a bit of a clarification since then, saying:

Clarification: aspects of the latest HTC Sense won’t work on some previous devices. We are working to incorporate other aspects that will

We have no clue what aspects they could mean as we don’t know all of the new features as of yet.  In the video released with the announcement of the HTC Sensation 4G, it looks like Sense 3.0 will feature a lot more animation to its menu screens.  While the most noticeable difference thus far, we also imagine that is the most hardware intensive, and thus probably one of the aspects that won’t be coming to the older phones.

While an Android UI skin isn’t something that usually should get people excited, when you’ve become one of the leading manufacturers of for an OS, with tripling profits as evidence, people start to take notice of any changes you make.  Telling customers that just bought a phone such as the ThunderBolt that they aren’t going to be included an update is not going to go far in winning customer loyalty.  In that particular case the phone isn’t even a month old as of this writing, and already its too underpowered for the next UI update?  Customers will remember this when it’s time for them to go buy their next phone, and perhaps they’ll think, “Gee, is there going to be an update in just a month or two that my phone can’t run?  I wonder what Phone Maker X has on the market right now …”

What do you think?  Should HTC be trying harder to make sure at least some of their previous models get Sense 3.0?
