Selling more than 1,000,000 copies isn’t too bad for a game that saw mixed critical reaction and lead to a large dip in stock value for its publisher. THQ’s Homefront is doing exceptionally well given the climate of its release; and, to prove that success, THQ’s distributed a press release noting the sales and shipment numbers of their most pre-ordered title.
Homefront has sold more than 1 million copies worldwide and shipped more than 2.4 million copies to retail. As expected, THQ is ecstatic with the results they’re seeing. In a press release from the publisher, THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell offered this:
We are very pleased with strong worldwide shipments and sell-through for Homefront, and we continue to fulfill new retail orders for the game across the globe…Homefront is clearly resonating with gamers and we are certainly pleased with our initial sales results.
While Homefront may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the fact that it’s selling well in spite of its Metacritic rating should be touted and celebrated. Publishers dictate what types of entries they’ll willingly publish by looking at aggregate ratings and sales performance. When a game like Homefront, a marginally risky project from THQ, does well at retail, it encourages the publisher to ante up and create more core experiences.
Sales like these all but guarantee a sequel in the Homefront universe and, hopefully, more projects like it from a publisher that typically sticks to licensed products. Gamers could be seeing a great new library from one of the world’s larger publishers, and that means more competition for EA and Activision… companies that could always use the push from another major outlet’s success.
