Sony Xperia Play Price Possibly Leaked

The Xperia Play by Sony Ericsson is Sony’s best answer for the PlayStation Phone pleas. The device features Android 2.3, a slide design, a 4 inch 854 x 480 multitouch LCD screen, two gesture-based joypads, PlayStation-esque buttons and much more. There are a whole slew of features that were explored upon the device’s official announcement. But does that make the phone worth the upcoming price tag?

File this one under rumor and misdirection until we receive a special announcement from Sony themselves. MTV Multiplayer has found a pre-order listing for the Xperia Play on Play.com. The unlocked version of the Xperia Play is listed at £519.99. Google tells us that converts to approximately $841.97. If the unlocked version is that pricey, one would assume the discounted carrier version would come in high too.

As a point of reference, Best Buy has the unlocked 32GB iPhone 4 (the device Sony is arguably placing in direct competition with the Xperia Play and the Android OS) at $699.99, the 16GB version sits at $599.99. The carrier specific version of the iPhone 4 16GB model is priced at $199.99.

We’re going to assume that this price point of more than $800 is simply a mistake listing. Play.com, hopefully, was just guessing at listing the device as high as they did. We hope.

The simple fact of the matter is that a price of more than $800 for any unlocked phone is a bit too hefty for our liking. We assume a lot of consumers would step away quickly if this news were true as well.

Hopefully Play.com is wrong and the Xperia Play gets a more appropriate entry price. But until we hear that announcement, we turn the question to you. Would you be willing to pay more than $800 for an unlocked version of the Xperia Play?

We’ll have more on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play as it becomes available, both officially and unofficially.
