The Dead Island trailer sparked a lot of interest and a bit of criticism from the gaming community at large late last week. Pretty much the entire blogosphere and Twitterscape were together raving about the perfect music selection, the great presence of mind to align time the way they did and the gorgeous affect it had on viewers. There were malcontents, however, that found particular fault with the use of a young girl’s death to set up a connection with the game.
What’s odd here is that this trailer was not done up by the folks at Techland, the company behind the game itself. People have yet to see a gameplay video and this game has already been hyped up like crazy because of the short clip above.
Now, according to reports from across the web, spawned mostly by this article on TheWrap, the Dead Island game had already landed Techland and publisher Deep Silver a movie deal with Sean Daniel and Union Entertainment. Consider those reports woefully inaccurate. And, consider this one of the few PSAs on the subject. Dead Island does not have a movie in the works yet.
According to Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of Koch Media, the parent company of Deep Silver:
We are looking for quality above all else for a movie based on Dead Island…We want to do it the right way as film realizations of games (or vice versa) usually fail to deliver what the fans were looking for…[Koch Media wants to] work with someone who already has a proven track record with blockbuster movies.
Props go to Koch Media for recognizing the fact that games don’t always translate to film too well. They seem to be holding the quality of their product in higher regard than the big bucks it could rake in.
The video above, which does not feature actual gameplay, has done a world of buzz generation for Dead Island. The game is on everyone’s radar now, and Koch Media, Deep Silver and Techland are aiming to do good things with this new fame.
