Digg is preparing to once again launch a redesign of its site in an attempt to win back some of the users its last redesign cost them.
Last July Digg launched a redesign that didn’t go over so well with its users. A lot of the disgruntled users headed over to Reddit, and it seems once they left, they never came back. As you can see in the chart below from Compete.com (click for a larger view), the decline in users didn’t come to stop until Dec. 2010, and even then it wasn’t exactly a huge jump.
The steady decline in the traffic resulted in a laying off of 37 percent of the company’s staff in Oct. of last year, and a proclamation the company would refocus its efforts.
With this laying the groundwork, the company announced last night that it would be rolling out a new version over the next few weeks that you be able to opt into, which means if you actually liked the 2010 design, you can just keep on using it. Below we have comparison shots of the old and new.
The 2010 version of the site brough with it a lot of physical changes, and also took away things like the historical data of each user. A lot of this is what led to the user exodus.
While the latest redesign doesn’t change much physically except to move the categories from the left sidebar to the top, and the actual profiles got the return of their statistics, there are a lot of little features also that were requested by users.
At this point it feels a little too much like the old saying something is like rearranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic. It’s hard to believe this is the same company that landed Mr. Rose on the cover of BusinessWeek back in 2006. Back then it seemed the company could do no wrong, but the company seemed to forget its success was all about its users, and making drastic changes without consulting them was not a wise move to say the least.
These latest changes are so minor that the majority of people won’t even notice them, and the power users have mostly moved on already, and it doesn’t feel like anything can bring them back at this point.
