Remember when the iPhone first came out? It was totally different than the Windows Mobile/Palm-based phones that were out at the time and it started a revolution. Now the iPhone is not alone in its ability to deliver serious features in a phone. Despite the fact there are a lot of phones that have yet to be released, I am going to give you the Top 5 Smartphones available that are not the iPhone.
5. Blackberry Torch (AT&T)
The Blackberry has a soft spot in my heart. I like the OS, and I love the build quality of RIM phones. The Torch has all the needed smartphone features, including a decent capacitive touch screen and a backlit, slide out QWERTY board. Blackberry OS 6 is a pleasure to use, and the battery life is pretty good. A good choice at $99, the Torch is a step in the right direction.
4. T-Mobile myTouch 4G
You have probably seen the commercials on TV for this phone. As much as I like a pretty woman making cheap insults at AT&T, I like this phone even more. Its got all of the must have features of a smartphone including 1Ghz Processor, front and rear facing cameras, 4G networking, a large 3.8-inch touchscreen and mobile hotspot. It comes preloaded with Android 2.2 with no word on a 2.3 upgrade. It looks pretty sexy, comes with generous accessories and is only $100 with a 2 year contract and annoying rebate.
3.Samsung Epic 4G (Sprint)
The Samsung Epic is the tour-de-force of smartphones on Sprint’s network. It was the flagship of the Galaxy S series, and was the only 4G one available. Its got a glamorous 4-inch super AMOLED screen, fast 1GHz processor, front and rear facing cameras and a decent slide out QWERTY keyboard. The one thing I don’t like about this phone is TouchWiz, the interface that Samsung puts over Android. The Epic 4G will set you back $200 on contract, which is a fair price for a lot of phones.
2. Droid X (Verizon)
I feel that in the swarm of phones, this one is getting lost in the mix. The Droid X has a 4.3″ edge-to-edge display,8MP camera with dual LED flash, an OMAP 1GHz processor with a dedicated GPU and Android 2.2. This phone is fast, sexy and a steal at $200. It doesn’t have 4G, but I wouldn’t let that stop you from buying it.
1.HTC EVO 4G (Sprint)
The HTC 4G is the best phone on the market right now. HTC phones have extremely good build quality and the EVO 4G continues that tradition. The screen is big and gorgeous, the camera takes high quality video and audio with an 8MP sensor, 1GB of RAM and a 1GHz processor make the EVO 4G scream and its got HTC Sense which, in my opinion, is the only Android skin that makes the OS better. Did I mention the EVO 4G has a front facing camera and HDMI out? What’s not to love for $200? Want to see TechnoBuffalo unbox the EVO 4G’s counterpart, the EVO SHift 4G? You’ve got it.
What do you think? Is my list fair and accurate? Got a phone that you think deserves to be on the list? Let me know in the comments. We read them, I promise.
For the sake of argument, if the iPhone 4 was included in this list, I think it would have come in 4th, bumping the Torch off the list and moving the myTouch to 5th. But that’s just me…
