HP Topaz Specs Leak Out

by Sean P. Aune | January 24, 2011January 24, 2011 10:32 am PDT

HP’s Topaz tablet first got rumored last week, and now it got a little bit more real with a leak of a ton of specs.

PreCentral has gotten its hands on the specs for the Topaz webOS tablet we told you about last week.  The fact sheet looks legit and spells out everything we should expect.  (click image for a slightly larger view)

For those who just wish to see the specs, here you go:

  • Processor – Dual-core Qualcomm MSM8660 at 1.2GHz
  • Graphics – Integrated Adreno 220 GPU
  • Screen – 9.7″ XGA 1024 x 768
  • Dimensions – 190mm x 240mm x 13.7mm
  • Weight – 700g / 1.5lb (estimated)
  • RAM – 512MB DDR2
  • Storage – 16g / 32g / 64g eMMC
  • Camera – Front-facing 1.3mp camera for Video Chat
  • Bluetooth – 2.1 + EDR
  • WiFi – Dual-band 802.11 b/g/n
  • Other Radios – Optional WWAN for HSPA, LTE, perhaps CDMA later
  • Sensors – Accelerometer, eCompass, Gyro, Light Sensor, Microphone
  • Speakers – 2 integrated speakers with Beats Audio, 3.5mm audio jack
  • Battery – 24WHr for >8hrs, using two 3150mAh cells

It seems the Topaz will include branding for both HP and Palm, while Beats audio may also get thrown on to the case as well.  Add in potential branding from carriers for the HSPA and LTE versions – CDMA coming later – and you’re going to have one busy, logo covered device.

There is also a chance of USB camera connectivity that will allow you to plug in a digital camera and edit and view photos from the device.  As for other nifty features, it looks like the cellular versions will have A-GPS, but as with so many products, the Wi-Fi version won’t.  So, no on the fly maps, Foursquare or Gowalla for you folks.

Also included in the leak were details on the Touchstone V2 charging dock, which will do a whole lot more than just charge this time around.

  • Wireless charging similar to what we have now
  • Wireless picture sharing
  • Wireless website sharing
  • Wireless audio streaming via Bluetooth to speaker dock
  • Wireless map and directions
  • Wireless music sharing from Palm smartphone (eg Broadway) to Topaz
  • Wireless contact sharing
  • Wireless printing
  • Wireless video streaming from Touchstone video dock to VGA or HDMI out
  • Wireless video game playing via Touchstone video dock

Apparently you will be able to start a video or game on the dock, and when you lift it off it will turn into a controller for the content that is streaming to your TV.

Still not enough for you?  It also looks like HP is taking productivity seriously with heavy cloud integration for the device.  It looks like it will work with Snapfish for photos, Melodeo for music, HP Cloud Drive and HP Cloud Canvas.  So you’ll be able to start work from anywhere and continue it whatever device you choose.  Very handy for using the Topaz “out in the field” for businesses or students in a classroom.  (Click the image for a larger view)

All in all, if all these specs prove to be true, which they look pretty spot on to us, it sounds like the Topaz is going to be a pretty nifty device.  Of course the big test will be the pricing.  After the backlash we saw over the rumored $800 price for XOOM (although some reports are saying $700), HP is going to have to be careful with the price tag they slap on this device.  We should learn a lot more about the Topaz, and it’s rumored smaller counterpart the Onyx, at the Feb. 9th webOS event.

What say you?  Any interest in the Topaz?
