Skype Down For Some, Google Probably Rejoicing

Popular VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) provide Skype is experiencing unknown issues today. If you can’t access the service, you aren’t alone.

As we write this, our Skype desktop app shows 10.4 users signed into the service, a massive drop from the usual 20 million or so that you see on a weekday. From the reports coming on from all over the globe it doesn’t seem to be isolated to any one region or language, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to who it is impacting.

Skype LogoThus far the official Skype Twitter channel has only issued one comment on the matter:

Some of you may have problems signing in to Skype – we’re investigating, and we’re sorry for the disruption to your conversations

From some reports, the issues started yesterday and have only escalated since then.

This couldn’t come at a worse time for Skype as Google just announced free calls through the end of 2011 just a few days ago for those using its Voice Chat services inside of Gmail.  The news is still fresh in people’s minds, and right now they are looking for alternative ways to make their calls.  True, this service is only available in the United States for the time being, but still not a good turn for Skype at the moment.

Are you experiencing any problems with Skype today?  The problems seem to be different for each person, so list your issues in the comments below.
