Yelp had a long lead on services such as Foursquare and Gowalla for building a service around the idea of reviewing locations, but it was lacking a check-in ability. That was rectified earlier this year, but unlike the afore mentioned services you didn’t earn badges, or find items, and you certainly didn’t earn a discount like you do at some Foursquare locations. What was the motivation for using Yelp when you already had other systems to check in to?
Well, as you can see from the video, Yelp has changed all that just in time for the busy holiday season.
Yelp has now introduced Check-In Offers that can be easily managed by a business owner, and they can set it to any sort of reward level they want. It sounds pretty straightforward, easy to do and a heck of a way to not only get people in the doors of businesses, but to also get more people using Yelp’s mobile apps.
The timing is particularly good as people set out to do their holiday shopping and will be stopping into more businesses and restaurants as they trudge through the streets. And as opposed to silly games (“Oh, I found a model train here!”), at least these rewards are useful.
