I have been on Twitter for just over two years now and I have heard so many people tell me the service is useless and just a waste of time. I have documented numerous times that I use Twitter for many things other than connecting with friends and other sports fans, and have told many non “tweeters” there is value in the 140 character snippets.
Now my point has been made by the iconic restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken as they are running a scholarship contest where high school Seniors can score $20,000 to use towards their college education.
“KFC is asking college hopefuls to tweet why they exemplify Colonel Sanders’ commitment to education and enriching their communities, and why they are deserving of a college scholarship,” the chain said in a statement.
Seniors have until November 26, 2010 to submit their tweet and must include the hashtag “#KFC”. The winner will be announced December 1st and will receive up to $5,000 a year for four years to go toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited university.
The tweets I have seen range from serious to downright silly and I encourage all of you to go check out a few by searching #KFC. Here are some of my favorites:

It’s encouraging to see companies evolve and engage younger customers on their own turf and I hope that more companies will engage the younger generation through social networking. So to all those people who tell you tweeting is a waste of time, come up with a great tweet for KFC and you will be able to wave twenty grand in front of their face.
