Hitting sometime this week, iOS 4.1 for the iPhone and iPod Touch will bring some welcome changes to the devices we may or may not already own. What will likely be one of the more popular, Game Center is the gaming social network that’ll let you challenge your friends and earn achievements to share with the world. After a reset yesterday of all player information, it looks like Game Center is finally upon us.
When the update hits this week (rumored for the 8th of September), owners of the iPod Touch 2nd, 3rd, or the most recent 4th generation as well as iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 will find a new icon added to their homescreen that’ll let you access all your friends, games, and achievements to begin your reign of gaming terror. Missing from the list of Game Center compatible devices are the iPod Touch 1st gen, iPhone, and iPhone 3G. The iPad is slated to adopt Game Center when iOS 4.2 aligns all iOS devices with the November firmware.
The omission of Game Center seems to be yet another reason for 3G owners to upgrade following the less than stellar speed of the device after upgrading to iOS 4.0. Although Apple seems to have alleviated some of the slowdown based on the gold master of iOS 4.1, the lack of multitasking and custom wallpaper have likely been reason enough to jump on the iPhone 4 bandwagon.
If you were looking forward to Game Center on your iPhone 3G, let the disappointment sink in now because once iOS 4.1 hits, you’ll be left with a hole of sadness as big as your heart. Everyone else, party on. Are you looking forward to Game Center? Let us know when you notice 4.1 as an available download in iTunes. We’ll try to do the same.
