The days leading up to an Apple event are always filled with rumors of what will be announced. They usually overshoot what we will see (how many times have we had a “confirmed” rumor of a Verizon iPhone?), but every once in a while something pops up that adds a lot of credence to what we’ve been hearing … and sometimes it throws you for a total loop.
With an Apple event coming Sept. 1st, the rumor mill in high gear. The stories of the iPod Touch getting a rear facing camera at minimum has been circulating for ages, but the pictures of cases that have been coming out make it pretty clear it’s really happening this year. We only ever see the rear of the cases so we don’t get confirmation of the forward facing camera, but that seems pretty definite. The other wacky rumor floating around is that the iPod Touch will be getting 3G support, but we find that a bit more difficult to believe.
Now, it’s fairly clear which of those cases above are for the Touch, but what about the other two above those? Well, the rumor is that those are cases for the new iPod Nano. Yep, you read that right. There had been images floating around for a while now that Apple was working with a 3 cm x 3 cm touchscreen, but no one was quite sure what it was about, but it now appears it was for the new version of the Nano. AppleInsider has the best mockup of what this could look like compared to the more familiar Nano form factor.
If this proves to be true, then it really does look like the click wheel could be dying off on Sept. 1st.
Apparently the new Nano will retain the standard Apple 30-pin connector so it can used with all of the current accessories out there; this would probably be the smallest any device could get and retain that connection. Of course the question is how well anyone could use a touchscreen of that size, but we won’t know until we hold one in our hand.
Be sure to tune into TechnoBuffalo on Sept. 1 to get all of the iPod news you need.
What say you? Is the Nano going to shrink to the size of a second generation Shuffle?
