Transformers: War For Cybertron Getting DLC Sure To Annoy Pre-Order Buyers

Downloadable content (DLC) is becoming a huge part of the video gaming economy (and possibly leading to declining sales of new games), but what happens when the first first add-on release for a game basically negates any of the benefits you got from pre-ordering?  How are gamers going to react to losing their exclusivity?

Optimus Prime from War For CybertronI’ve mentioned before how I hate pre-order bonuses for games.  They just got complicate the buying process, and they force you to make decisions about a game you have yet to play.  For better or worse they seem to be here to stay, but what about when it turns out after making your choice of where to buy results in you getting an exclusive bonus only for a limited time?  That is the situation buyers of Transformers: War For Cybertron are about to find themselves in.

After announcing three exclusive characters as pre-order bonuses for the release of the game, High Moon Studios has announced that the first DLC pack will have four new multiplayer maps, two brand new characters and … all three of the pre-order bonus characters.

Personally, my heart isn’t broken as I went with the character I cared about the least because Amazon would give me $10 off another video game purchase, and I found that more alluring than the exclusive characters.  That being said, people have been so in love with the Shockwave exclusive that unclaimed codes had been going for $50 on eBay.  Now they will be able to get him on the PS3 for $10 and for 800 Microsoft points on Xbox Live.

While not every game has done this, it is definitely going to make some people think twice now about caring about pre-order bonuses, and why should they?    If everyone is going to get the content a month or two down the road, where are the benefits to pre-ordering?  I’m really happy I made my decision based on that coupon as opposed to the characters … but now I can’t wait to use Shockwave.

The Transformers: War For Cybertron DLC comes out July 27th (or a mere 35 days since the game was released).

What say you  Is this a mistake for game makers to release pre-order bonuses later on in DLC?
