Is The Microsoft Kinect Just A Fancy Playstation Eye Toy?

I get what people are saying, and yes, there are some very definite similarities.  With the years that have passed (the Eye Toy was released in 2003 and 2004), it is natural that technology has advanced, but I’m still reluctant to say that the Kinect is just more expensive, and fancier, version of this device.  The Eye Toy was merely detecting dimensional location while the Kinect is using full body tracking.

Personally, I think this will be a judgement for each person to make on their own, but I will at least give in and say, “Yes, the Eye Toy was a camera for a gaming console and was released previous to the Kinect.”

What say you?  Is Microsoft just ripping off the Eye Toy with the Kinect, or is it apples and oranges?
