It’s been a while since those Steam for Mac teaser images made their way around the web, hinting at a native Mac client. April came and went without a public release, instead the launch of a beta client made its way to eager early adopters. After a small delay, Valve is now ready to begin its game rollout via Steam.
Announced yesterday, Valve issued a press release stating that Steam will launch today on the Mac platform followed by additional game releases on subsequent Wednesdays. Among the games within today’s rollout are Portal and Torchlight. Gamers who have already picked up Portal for the PC will be able to download and play Portal on the Mac for no additional charge thanks to Valve’s “Steam Play”, which allows games bought on any platform to be played on all supported platforms.
Valve is also bringing its Steamworks suite of publishing and development tools onto the Mac which will allow game developers to build Steam title on the Mac. Look for more game releases on subsequent Wednesdays from here on out.
