Five Boredom Killers

by Sean P. Aune | April 27, 2010

You’ve surfed every website known to man.  You’ve seen your fill of YouTube videos of people doing stupid things.  And worst of all?  You are bored with playing Tetris online.  What can you possibly do to kill off your boredom, you know, other than going outside and experiencing the world?  Here are five suggestions of things we here at TechnoBuffalo do when we just have to kill off the boredom, but don’t want to leave our trusty computers.

Archive.org Is Always A Good For A Laugh

It always amazes me how many people don’t know about the wonders of Archive.org.  We are all so used to the slick site designs of today, but thanks to the Wayback Machine, you can enter just about any website and see versions of them from over the years, and it is fascinating to see how some of them have changed over the years.

Here is Engadget.com from March 5, 2004.  Not quite the site we know today, is it?

Clean Up Your Bookmarks

This is a personal favorite of mine.  I have been moving the same bookmark file around for over ten years now, and as you might imagine, I have a lot of junk in there that is either just way outdated, now goes to a dead link or just isn’t useful to me any more.  Every so often I like to take a look through a folder and open every link to make sure it’s something that is still worthwhile having.  I’ll admit it, I just finally deleted the last links I had with information on Y2K … yes, the computer problem that was supposed to happen at midnight on Jan. 1st, 2000.  Apparently I need to get bored a bit more frequently.

New Desktop Wallpapers Always Brighten The Day

A lot of us pick a desktop wallpaper, and then we just leave it there for life.  I know I’ve been guilty of this many times over the years, but the Web is lousy with high quality wallpapers, so why aren’t you out there looking for some?  There are sites for just about every interest, and heck, just searching Google Images can land you a lot of good ones, so knock yourself out with some new background pretties.

Organize Your My Documents

As someone who writes for a living, I have the most insane collection of documents known to man, and no matter how often I go into My Documents and try to sweep it out, there always seems to be a bit more I can do to clean it up.  Don’t recognize an odd ball file name?  Open it up and see what it is, and get rid of it immediately if you no longer have a use for it.

Search YouTube For Retro Commercials

This amuses me to no end.  You can enter just about any product name and find some old embarrassing commercial the company would rather forget about.  How do you think we come up with some of the gems we bring you right here on TechnoBuffalo like Steve Ballmer trying to sell you Windows 1.0?  You just can’t get comedy like that anymore without digging through YouTube for the odd balls.

What Do You Do?

So what are some of the unusual ways you kill your boredom online?
