Way back on August 6th, 1997 during an Apple keynote, Bill Gates announced that Microsoft had made a $150 million investment in Apple. This investment saved a once bleeding Apple from financial hardship in return for a 5-year commitment to support Microsoft Office on Macs for five years and ship Internet Explorer as the default browser for the Mac. Apple also dropped a lawsuit claiming Microsoft copied the look of Mac OS onto Windows and agreed to share patent licenses over those next five years. As shocking as it sounds today, Apple owes much of its existence today to their partnership with Microsoft.
