There will come a day in the not-too-distant future when Disney and Netflix break up. What does that mean for you? Well, if you enjoy movies like Pete’s Dragon and Lilo and Stitch, then your Netflix subscription just became a little less alluring.
The good news is Disney doesn’t plan to start its own streaming service until next year, so you have plenty of time to enjoy Moana, The Jungle Book, and Fantasia. Just know that the Disney-pocalypse is nigh, giving you a limited time to watch the movies below.
Before they disappear from Netflix for good, below are ten Disney movies that both children and adults will enjoy.
The Emperor’s New Groove
I’ll admit I wasn’t onboard with The Emperor’s New Groove when it released in 2000. But don’t make the same mistake I did, because it’s a hugely underrated classic that uses the cliche buddy comedy to great effect. When a young emperor is turned into a llama, he must trust a village leader to help him turn back into a human. Some of the voice talent includes David Spade, John Goodman, and Patrick Warburton.
Lilo and Stitch
Who doesn’t love a cutesy alien creature wreaking havoc? Lilo and Stitch is the kind of movie that Disney does best: Using an unlikely duo to teach life lessons. While Lilo and Stitch is about family and acceptance, it also speaks to viewers who grow attached to their pets. Who said an unusual extraterrestrial creature can’t adopt a human family?
You know all about Zootopia by now. Again, Disney anthropomorphizes animals to teach lessons about acceptance and chasing after your dreams. It’s funny, it’s touching, and it shows that Disney’s animated chops have caught up to, and maybe even surpassed, that of Pixar’s.
Another fantastic Disney Animation classic, Moana tells the story about a Polynesian girl who goes on an unlikely adventure to save her people. Moana features delightful visual, incredible set-pieces, and annoyingly catch music to tell a beautiful tale, beautifully showcasing Polynesian culture and their connection to the ocean.
The Jungle Book
I did not expect to like The Jungle Book as much as I did. Nevertheless, I fell in love after catching the premiere—everything from the music to the visuals left a wonderful and lasting impression. And how can you not love “Bare Necessities?”
As a kid, I didn’t quite understand what I was seeing while watching Fantasia. All I knew was I absolutely loved it. Fantasia represents everything we love about early Disney animation. It’s dramatic, moving, and unforgettable, setting the segments to some of classical music’s best pieces.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
I still can’t believe Who Framed Roger Rabbit came out all the way back in 1988. A concept that shouldn’t have worked has gone on to be selected by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the United States National Film Registry. Featuring Bob Hoskins, Who Framed Roger Rabbit uses live-action and animation to tell a thrilling noir story about an animated rabbit accused of murdering a businessman.
Pete’s Dragon didn’t get the love it deserved when it was released in 2016. Maybe it was its fantasy nature, or the fact that it was based on the 1977 musical of the same name. Whatever led to it being overlooked, Pete’s Dragon is a moving film about a young boy who befriends a dragon and affectionately named Elliot.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
If you ever need a reason why stop-motion animation is so special, look no further than The Nightmare Before Christmas. The dark fantasy/musical subverts several genres on its way to becoming a Christmas classic. It took Tim Burton several years to get the movie made, but it was certainly worth the wait.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
The Pirates franchise isn’t what it used to be, but we’ll always remember the first film as a marquee moment. Not only did it turn the beloved ride into a feature length film, but it has one of the most memorable scores. It also helped launch the careers of Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, while cementing Johnny Depp as one of Hollywood’s best character actors.
