And the iPhone App of the Year for 2011 Is…
Who would have thought that a camera application would be the #1 iPhone application of 2011. Instagram soared to the top in Apple’s App Store Rewind 2011 list, beating out Facebook, Pandora and Words With Friends. It’s worth mentioning here that Apple chose the best apps of 2011 rather than adhering to download and revenue stats.
Instagram is a fantastic application for the iPhone that lets users select from a myriad of image effects to apply in post with names like Kelvin, Nashville and Lomo-fi. However, I think the Camera+ application from tap tap tap is just as worthy. In fact, Instagram did not even make it into the top 10 list in any category, scoring a modest 14th place for Top Free Apps.
App of the Year Runners-Up were VidRhythm, which creates mash-up music videos and Band Of The Day, which features a new band each day to listen to. This year’s iPhone Game of the Year was Tiny Tower, even though Angry Birds crushed all in its path for paid apps. Tiny Wings and Touchgrind BMX received honorable mentions in the Game of the Year category.
Interestingly enough, Apple’s top pick for iPad app was Snapseed, another photo application that lets users manipulate photos and even connect a camera via USB for instant editing.
