Samsung Galaxy Tab now Official

screen-shot-2010-09-02-at-70505-am-645x430

It seems like since the iPad was released, every single tech company in the world is manufacturing an Android tablet to rival Apple’s. And the first one to try and take down the iPad from it’s throne is the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Announced this morning in Berlin, the Galaxy Tab is a 7″ Android tablet running Froyo. Other specs include a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, Flash 10.1, a 4,000 mAh battery, quad-band GSM, a 3MP rear facing camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, full HD video playback at 1080p, microSD slot for upto 32 GB cards and all of that weighs only 380g!

Now what makes this different from the iPad is that it makes phone calls. The Galaxy Tab uses a HSUPA 5.76 Mbps / HSDPA 7.2 Mbps radio on the 900, 1900, 2100 MHz bands. The Galaxy Tab is set to launch later this month in Europe and here in the UK. Then later on this year Korea, the US and the rest of Asia will get it. There is no word on pricing or carriers, but could this be the iPad killer?

iPod Touch Becomes Even Better Because of Cameras, Facetime and Retina Display

ipodtouch-heroAlongside the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle announcements at the Apple Music Keynote this morning, the iPod Touch also got redesigned with long-lusted after features which makes this new iPod Touch basically exactly the same as the iPhone, except for the phone part. As it has front and rear facing cameras, FaceTime, HD video recording, gyroscope and the 1GHz A4 chip. What’s more, it is even thinner! Now as you’d expect, you will have to pay a lot more for all of this compared to the other iPods, but you do get a lot more. Prices start at $229 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB. Shipping starts next week and pre-orders start from today.

Apple Reveals New iPod Nanos and Shuffles

top

At the Apple Music Keynote today in San Francisco, Steve Jobs took the stage to announced the holiday line up of iPods. So any way lets get into it.

hero1_20100901

The iPod Shuffle was first to receive an update. The iPod shuffle has been a strange device. Many say it is pointless because of the lack of a screen, while others say (mainly people who exercise) say it is an essential part of the iPod line up. This year it got back the buttons but also has the same voice features of last years buttonless model. Not much else to say except it has a clip so you can clip it on clothes, it comes in 5 colours and it has 2GB of storage, all for $49.

Next, iPod Nano. Earlier this year, we saw a very small touchscreen leaked out into the world with apparently Apple branding all over it. Well it seems like this one has come true. The new nano has ditched the click wheel for a touch screen, a very small touch screen at that, but it is still a touch screen and seems to have some sort of version of iOS running on it. All the usual stuff is on there in the form of icons on different screens and yes you can make it do the jiggly dance so you can move the icons around. Reports from places like Engadget are saying that the touchscreen is very responsive and great to look at. Also, seeing as it has a clock app, if you strap it to a wrist strap, you can turn it into an iWatch! And that is the only reason I’m getting one.

The First Trojan for Android is Discovered

android_apps

Well it seems like Android is becoming a PC, as security firm Kaspersky detected a trojan going by the name of “Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a”. This trojan is downloaded  as an Android app and according to  Kaspersky it is the first known Android targeted trojan.

The trojan poses as a media player app but when the app is installed, it starts sending SMS’s to premium rate numbers without telling the user. As the creators of the trojan usually set up the numbers, they benefit from this scam. These types of trojans have been on mobile phones for years, but as far as I am aware, this is the first time it has been put on an Android device.

Kaspersky Lab is supposedly working on Android-specific antivirus software and plans to release it early next year. Even though there are antivirus apps already available in the Android Market, it was supposed to be unnecessary. But I guess it is only a matter of time before we see the 1990s war between the Mac and PC start all over again.

Apple to Fix Mobile Safari Bug

cydia_logo_and_icon_by_zandog

Apple has just told CNET that they have fixed the bug in mobile safari which allowed the jailbreakme.comjailbreak by the iPhone Dev Team. The bug that allowed the jailbreak was a security vulnerability in the way it loads PDF files from the Web. An Apple spokesperson said that “We’re aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update,” but there was no word on when it was going to be released.

Whenever this update gets pushed out to the world, the jailbreakme.com jailbreak will not work and the iPhone Dev Team will have to work out another way to make Steve Jobs very angry.
