Acknowledging the company may have bit off more than it could chew in the mobile space, Yahoo announced it’s pulling support for ten of its lesser-used mobile apps. The decision comes on the heels of a mildly disappointing Q4 earnings report last week in which the company revealed it declined year-over-year in overall net earnings.

In a blog post titled “The Times They Are a Changing,” Yahoo listed the apps it plans to cut across various mobile platforms, including: Yahoo! Meme (iPad and iPhone), Yahoo! Answers (Android), Yahoo! AppSpot (Android and iPhone) and Yahoo! Finance (BlackBerry). In order to move forward with a “mobile first” mindset, the company must first “scrutinize what’s working and what isn’t – so we can make room for great new products.”

If you’re a fan of one or multiple of the perishing Yahoo produced apps, fear not: the company has plans to make an even bigger, more focused push with mobile products in 2012. Previously, Yahoo introduced a “living magazine” iPad app late last year, and it plans to innovate in other popular mobile areas while improving on its most popular apps: Yahoo Mail, Flickr, Messenger, Sportacular. In addition, the company said that some features of its disappearing apps will make it into existing applications, e.g. Sketch-a-Search will be integrated into Yahoo Search.

With most of the attention being gobbled up by Google and other popular competing services, Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson has quite the task on his hands to turn the superannuated Internet brand into something fresh and exciting. Mobile is certainly a good place to start, as more and more of the world’s population jump into bourgeoning industry.
