Hidden Gems: Chibi-Robo!

In this weekly column, we’ll be selecting inexpensive, discarded titles from still playable consoles for your perusal. They may be games you’ve heard of and remember playing, or they may be games that have flown completely off of your radar. Just know that we love them and they’re available on the cheap. That’s a bonafide win/win situation.

If you have any favorite titles that you consider hidden gems, let us know in the comments below and we might feature your pick in the weekly column.

Chibi-Robo!
Platforms:
GameCube, Wii
Original Release:
February 2006

Chibi-Robo! will take a unique approach from anyone looking to enjoy its charm, especially given today’s gaming climate of shooting, killing, maiming, exploding and space marine-ing. It simply is not a “traditional” gaming experience by today’s standards.

Stick with me, because this is going to sound extremely boring; Chibi-Robo! is a game that tasks players with performing daily chores as a tiny robot in a Japanese household.

It’s a lot more than that, however, as Chibi will require charging, upgrades and combat abilities. He’ll also meet a crazy cast of characters in both the day and night time elements of his surroundings. What starts out as a game about keeping one house clean turns into an adventure of much, much larger proportions.

Odds are, you’ve never experienced anything quite like Chibi-Robo!. I’ll mention this, too: the soundtrack and audio design within this product are more than likely worth the price of entry. Find it used, play it on your GameCube or Wii.

Be sure to check out our ever-growing list of Hidden Gems.
