Facebook Purchases Location-Based Service Gowalla
Facebook has purchased Foursquare-competitor Gowalla. Gowalla originally launched in 2009, went head-to-head with Foursquare, and in the end lost pretty big. The service relaunched as a travel guide later on, but still wasn’t met with a ton of success.
The deal has yet to be officially announced, but an unnamed source spoke to CNN about the acquisition stating “It’s a perfect match…As far as the big picture, Gowalla‘s vision is about people telling stories, and Facebook’s vision for Timeline is about stories about important moments in life.”
It will be interesting to see what Facebook decides to do with service. Most of Gowalla’s staff is rumored to be headed to Facebook’s offices in Palo Alto to help work on Facebook’s new timeline feature.
What types of things could you see come out of Gowalla bring part of Facebook.
