AT&T Lights Up Its New 4G Network, Can You Tell A Difference?
AT&T activated its 4G LTE network on Sunday, making its speedy debut in five major markets: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The company plans on adding an addition 10 markets to the mix by the end of the year.
Wait, doesn’t AT&T already have 4G?
AT&T is already running an HSPA+ network, which it advertises as “4G” when for all intents and purposes it’s not. According to Dave Fine, AT&T’s vice president and general manager for Illinois and Wisconsin in an interview with the Chicago Tribune, AT&T’s HSPA+ is capable of speeds from 3-5Mbps, while LTE offers a much faster 5-9Mbps.
Verizon already has a reasonably expansive 4G LTE network. The company launched its LTE service last December in 38 cities.
